Are You Giving Your Gums The Attention They Deserve?
When was the last time you visited our office for an oral hygiene examination and cleaning? If it has been longer than six months, you are due for a visit. During these visits, we do more than just clean and check your teeth. We also check the health of your gums. This month is National Gum Care Month, so we want to explain more about the importance of caring for your gums.
The Importance of Caring for Your Gums
When many of us think about oral health, we are mainly concerned about our teeth. In actuality, gum health is just as important. Gums are necessary to ensure that the tooth root, tooth structure, and jawbone remain healthy and secure. Unfortunately, there is a common condition that affects more than half of American adults at some point during their lifetime. This condition is known as gum disease. Gum disease occurs when the gum tissue becomes inflamed and then infected. If not treated and cared for properly, gum disease can lead to serious oral health complications, such as tooth loss.
How to Care for Your Gums
There is no special trick to caring for your gums. The easiest way is to ensure you have an excellent oral hygiene routine. You should brush your teeth for a minimum of two minutes twice a day and use dental floss at least daily. One of the biggest problems we see with our patients is that they do not floss as often as they should. If you are unsure how to floss properly, we would be more than happy to give you a demonstration the next time you are in our office.
It is also important that patients visit our office every four to six months for an oral hygiene examination appointment so we can not only check their teeth but also their gums. Aside from cleaning your teeth, routine dental care allows us to remove any plaque and tartar along the gum line, ensuring that your gums remain healthy.
If you have any questions or concerns about your oral health, we would love to hear from you. If you are in need of an oral hygiene examination appointment for yourself or a loved one, we encourage you to contact our office, which is located in Wellington, FL, to schedule an appointment. We look forward to seeing you for your routine examination appointment in the near future!
